Day trip to Hiroshima? / general advice

Hello! :)

Me and my friend are flying into Tokyo and leaving from Osaka. Our Itinerary is Tokyo 4 days, Mount Fuji day trip, Kyoto 4 days, Hiroshima day trip then a day or 2 in Osaka.

I have 2 questions, any advice would be very appreciated.

1) Would it be best to go to Osaka and take a round day trip to Hiroshima or go from Kyoto in the morning to Hiroshima and to travel to Osaka that night?

2) We are only planning to go to Hiroshima for a day and Osaka for 1/2 days...Are both cities worth such a short time? I hear the Hiroshima Peace Park is a must, and we mainly only want to go to Osaka because of the Airport near to Kyoto. Are we trying to do too much?

Hi there,

1.) It does not really make that much of a difference. Coming from Kyoto, there is nearly always a transfer at Shin-Osaka station. So leaving from Osaka to Hiroshima is faster but you can save a bit of travel time in the grand scheme of things by going to Osaka after Hiroshima.

2.) Hiroshima works as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. The peace memorial park and museum are not to be missed and you could add in a visit to Miyajima as well. Osaka for half a day is not a lot but you could use that time to walk around Dotonbori/Shinsaibashi, to get a feel of the local atmosphere. I think that would be the best way to spend your limited time there.
