Hi,

We plan to stay in Japan for 9 days. Could you please help us identify the best/cheapest mode of transportation for our trip. Below is our itinerary:

Narita airport to Shinjuku train station;
Shinjuku to Kyoto;
then Kyoto to Osaka

We would also like to know if the JR pass would be a good option for us, or not.
Any other tips are welcome :)

Thank you.

Hi there,

  • The best way to get from Narita to Shinjuku would be to take the Narita Express and continue to Daimon (Tokyo), where you can change and board a Toei Oedo service directly to Shinjuku.

  • Shinjuku to Kyoto can be done by boarding a Yamanote line service to Shinagawa, and then taking a Tokaido Shinkansen service (Hikari is probably best for you) directly to Tokyo Station.

  • Kyoto to Osaka can be done by taking a Tokaido Sanyo Main Line service towards Himeji which will take you directly Osaka.

I wouldn't say a JR Pass would be your cheapest option as your itinerary is fairly simple, although your itinerary is entirely covered and so it may be worth considering if you plan on making any day trips to nearby places e.g. Nara from Kyoto, etc.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
