Hi! We booked our honeymoon flights and then realised it will be right in the middle of the Golden Week 2023. We will depart on 28 April, arriving in Tokyo on 29 April. This is a draft itinerary only as we are unsure in what order we should visit the cities.

29 Apr - Arrive in Tokyo early morning and travel to Osaka
30 Apr - Osaka (maybe day trip to Kobe)
1 May - Osaka
2 May - Travel from Osaka to Kyoto
3-4 May - Kyoto
5 May - Travel from Kyoto to Tokyo
6-9 May - Tokyo
10 May - Evening flight home

Questions
1) Would the 7 day JR pass be our best option?
2) Given I can only exchange the JR pass when I'm in Japan so won't be able to reserve seats until I land. Would it be an issue (i.e. unable to reserve seats due to fully booked) if we want to travel from Tokyo to Osaka on the day we land?
3) If Q2 will be an issue, is it better to reserve the itinerary (i.e. spend the first few days in Tokyo then travel out to Osaka/Kyoto?)

Thank you! :)

Hi there,

1.) Yes

2.) It would not be a problem, as you can always queue for a non-reserved seat. Just come a bit earlier to the station and queue at the non-reserved train cars. The 29th is the start of Golden Week, so it will be busy.

3.) While you will be able to get to Osaka on the 29th, it may be more comfortable to stay a few days in Tokyo first after a long flight and then have reserved seats when you go back and forth to Osaka and Kyoto.

Kind regards,
Daniel
