Introduction to the Amarube Bridge and Viaduct

Here at JRPass some of us consider us Tetsudo fans, meaning railway fans. Japan being the ultimate railway destination, we sometimes like to share specific highlights that make the railway system so special. One of them is the picturesque Amarube Railway bridge and viaduct. It has stood the time for over 100 years, is still in service with scenic views over the coastline. The bridge has a special observation platform called the “Sky Station” for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Located in the remote Sanin region near the quaint town of Kasumi. The structure dates back to 1912 when its initial construction was completed and, even since, has been the largest of its kind in Japan. Stretching a massive 310.7meters with an elevated height of 41.5 meters. The original structure was entirely built out of steel and as an early 1900s industrial “Eiffel Tower like-” feeling to it. The bridge was reinforced with concrete in 2010, but much of the original structure can be seen.

A visit is especially interesting for those who are interested in seeing the rural Japanese countryside. The Sanin area is especially known for its nostalgic feel of times past and is perfect for a trip were taking it slow and enjoying the environment is a goal on its own.

How to access the Amarube bridge

The bridge is located on the San-in Main line, that runs between Kyoto and Shimonoseki with the closest station called Amarube. Coming from the Kansai Area (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe) the fastest way is to take a limited
express train to Kinosaki Onsen and use a local train service from there. The route is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
